The Department of English Language and Literature provides courses tailored for primary and secondary school teachers. The overall study programme is divided into bachelor and magisterial programmes, with every BA or MA student expected to choose a combination of two subjects to study simultaneously within one study programme. English is paired up with Czech, German, Russian and French language, social sciences, art education, music education, pedagogy, mathematics and IT. The department also runs two distance learning programmes entitled “The Didacticts of English Language” and “English Teacher-Training for Upper Primary and Secondary Schools”, respectively. The department operates an authorized Cambridge English examination centre under the auspices of Charles University in Prague (http://webkajl.pedf.cuni.cz/cambridgeexams/).
The department’s scholarly and publication activities typically reflect its core fields of interest, namely English linguistics, literature written in English and English didactics. Successful MA graduates may apply for a doctoral study programme whose completion will earn them a PhDr. title.
