The Faculty of Education, Charles University, has issued a statement regarding the revised Framework Educational Programs (FEP) by the Ministry of Education, Youth, and Sports. The Faculty welcomes the efforts to modernize the educational systems but highlights several challenges associated with the revision and its implementation.

The Dean of the Faculty, Antonín Jančařík, emphasizes the importance of the professional community involvement in the preparation of the reform:

“It is striking that the Faculty of Education at Charles University, along with other education faculties, was not even invited to participate in the FEP revision process. We consider this to be a missed opportunity, as the academic contribution of the universities is crucial for such a substantial reform. Furthermore, it is alarming that even the pre-selected schools have not been able to develop new School Education Programs that would be approved by the authorities and simultaneously based on the revised FEP. This indicates significant difficulties with the implementation of the new FEP. We, as a leading education faculty, are prepared to provide professional support and work hard for the future of Czech education.”

Dominik Dvořák, a scientific researcher of the Institute for Research and Development in Education of the Faculty of Education, highlights the importance of long-term research:

“Even though the primary focus is currently set on the ongoing FEP revision for primary and subsequent levels of education, we must not forget about the more distant future. We, at the Faculty of Education, analyse both the successes and shortcomings of the current revision. Using these insights will help us create new doctoral programs and prepare professionals who will contribute to future curriculum reforms. We believe that systematic research is a necessary prerequisite for a sustainable development of the education system.”

Daniel Pražák, a teacher and graduate of the Faculty of Education, accentuates the necessity of transparency and active participation:

“International experience demonstrates that the success of a reform largely depends on a transparent, active, and participatory approach. At the outset of the FEP revision for primary education, these principles were prominent and were positively received by the professional community. Unfortunately, over time, the transparency has dissipated and the revision has been losing its credibility ever since. However, the revision is not concluded by the approval of the document by the Ministry; the real work starts with its implementation at schools. It is absolutely necessary that both the professional and the teaching communities come together, actively engage and ensure that the process is as transparent as possible. Let us hope that this revision brings genuine improvements in our system of education.”

The Faculty of Education, Charles University, is prepared to be an active partner in implementing the revised FEP and support the teachers, school principals, and other professionals with the adaptation to the new requirements of FEP. The Faculty also emphasizes that educational reform must be conceived as a long-term process which requires not only expert analyses, but also broad collaboration among all involved.
