The Faculty of Education, Charles University, turns 80. Here is what lies ahead

The Faculty of Education, Charles University, is not marking eighty years since its founding with a single ceremonial day, but with an entire winter semester. From October to December 2026, the anniversary programme brings together festive moments, academic debate, alumni gatherings and events organised by students themselves. Here is an overview of the highlights.

A World Without Teachers: a competition for pupils

What would a world without teachers look like? That is the question the competition Svět bez učitelů (A World Without Teachers) puts to pupils and students of primary, secondary and basic art schools. They can answer with a painting, an illustration, a comic, a piece of writing, a video, a podcast or a digital project. Entries can be submitted until 11 November 2026, and full details are available at svetbezucitelu.cz.

12 November: a conference and a ceremonial assembly at the Karolinum

The most festive day of the celebrations will be Thursday 12 November. From 9.30 am, the Vlastenecký sál (Patriotic Hall) of the Karolinum will host the conference Researching the Teaching Profession as a Path to Pedagogical Understanding. Aimed at the academic and professional community, it will present the results of the five-year Cooperatio research programme. Registration is open until 8 November, and the invitation with the programme and the registration form can be found on the Faculty website.

At 5 pm, the Great Hall of the Karolinum will host a ceremonial assembly to mark the Faculty's 80th anniversary, to which representatives of the university, the academic community, faculties of education and other guests are invited. The ceremony will be followed by a performance by the Faculty choir Collegium paedagogicum together with the chamber choir and orchestra Piccolo coro & Piccola orchestra, and the evening will close with an informal reception. Registration for the assembly is required by 29 October or until capacity is reached.

A week of student societies and councils

From 9 to 15 November, the celebrations are in the hands of student societies and student councils of the Faculty's departments, who are preparing their own programme at the Faculty and beyond. A taste of what is to come is a pub quiz on the Faculty's history on Wednesday 11 November at 6.30 pm at The Pub & Grill No. 1. More events are listed at pass.pedf.cuni.cz.

10 December: Alumni Day, a lecture by Christopher Day and a festive evening

On Thursday 10 December, the Faculty's main building on Magdalény Rettigové Street will open its doors to alumni and current students alike. The Alumni Day will be titled What We Came With, What We Took With Us, and its detailed programme is currently being prepared.

At 3 pm, Professor Christopher Day of the University of Nottingham, who has long been dedicated to research on the teaching profession, will speak in the Faculty's Aula. His lecture, Issues of Quality: Teachers' Work, Lives and Identities in the Ecology of Education, will explore what shapes the quality of teachers' work and their professional identity.

The day will close with a festive evening at the Faculty with refreshments and live music. It is planned to begin at 5 pm, and the exact time will be confirmed.

An exhibition, a film and more surprises

The Faculty is also preparing an exhibition, 80 Years of the Faculty of Education, Charles University. It will take visitors through the Faculty's history from its founding to the present day, recalling its deans and the changes to the building it calls home. The date will be announced.

In addition, a documentary film on the importance of the teaching profession and the role faculties of education play in it is being made in cooperation with faculties of education in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. And because the celebrations belong above all to those who make up the Faculty today, we are also preparing a programme for current students during the semester. We will reveal what it looks like soon.

Up-to-date information on all events can be found in the calendar on the Faculty website. Any questions can be sent to .

We look forward to celebrating the Faculty's eightieth birthday together.
